The Calhoun County Office of the Sheriff Pennfield Team responded to 191 calls for service in the month of October and had 57 patrol generated complaints. Deputies wrote 75 citations for the month. The Pennfield Team made seven OWI arrests and made arrests on three drug related incidents. In early October, deputies were dispatched to a Pennfield home in reference to a Breaking and Entering in progress. Dispatched advised that a juvenile, who was home sick from school, observed two males attempting to break into his house. Dispatch further advised that the suspects were trying to force open the kitchen door and the juvenile who was home sick was attempting to push the door closed. Officer’s quickly arrived on scene and spoke with the complaint. As they were speaking with the complaint, one of the officers spotted a male matching the description given two yards away. The officer commanded the suspect to stop however; the suspect began to run climbing over several fences in the process. Deputies gave chase and were able to catch up with the suspect and take him into custody. Deputies then began to canvas the area for the other suspect. The second suspect was located hiding behind a garage in the neighbor’s back yard. When interviewing the suspects it was determined that the suspects had broken into the same residence at least one prior time. The suspects were identified as two juveniles from Battle Creek who were truant from school. The suspects were transported to the Juvenile Home in Marshall and charged with Home Invasion and Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer. On October 28, 2009 in the morning hours, Deputies were dispatched to Natalia Lane for an alarm. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a lower level window was broken and it appeared as if someone was attempting to or had gained access to the residence. Deputies entered the residence; however, the perpetrator had already left the area. A concerned neighbor came to the scene and gave a description of a male who was walking in the area approximately 30 minutes prior to the police cars arrival. The home owner also arrived on scene and advised that he saw the same individual walking west on Verona Road near Wattles Road. Deputies canvassed the area and were able to locate the suspect. While processing the crime scene, it did appear that the suspect stepped through the broken window leaving a shoe print on a freezer located adjacent to the window. The suspect in which the deputies located was identified by the neighbor as the individual he saw walking in the area. Also, deputies secured the suspects footwear and matched it to the footprints found on the freezer. They were a match. The suspect was arrested for Breaking and Entering and gave a voluntary confession to the crime. The suspect, an Albion man, was transported to the Calhoun County Correctional Facility where he was booked for the B & E. The suspect also has a history of B & E’s and due to the attentiveness of the neighbor and the home owner, the Sheriff’s Office was able to remove a career criminal from the streets. The Calhoun County Office of the Sheriff Pennfield Team responded to 201 calls for service in the month of September and had 44 patrol generated complaints. Deputies wrote 97 citations for the month. Deputies arrested 6 people for Driving Under the Influence and investigated 5 drug related incidents. The Office of the Sheriff has noticed a rise in the production of methamphetamine in the month of September. Investigators executed several search warrants in numerous townships within the county. Methamphetamine Clandestine Labs were found in Tekonsha Township, Homer Township, Convis Township, and two search warrants were executed in Pennfield Township. The production of methamphetamine can produce poisonous gases and hazardous waste. For every pound of methamphetamine that is produced there is four pounds of hazardous waste left behind. Often times the waste is dumped in woods, streams, rivers, or lakes and can contaminate drinking water. The Office of the Sheriff is working hand in hand with pharmacies in the area and the pharmacies are alerting investigators of persons who are purchasing illegal amounts of products which contain ephedrine. Ephedrine is the active ingredient in methamphetamine. With the help of Silent Observer tips, the cooperation of pharmacies, and active investigations, the Office of the Sheriff is putting a halt to the production of methamphetamine within the county. An anonymous tip was called into the Office of the Sheriff in reference to a male who was selling illegal drugs outside of the Sunrise Cafe. Deputies responded to the tip and located the vehicle in which the suspect was driving. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver of the vehicle was found to have a suspended license. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and during a search of his person, approximately sixteen grams of crack cocaine was located in the pocket of his jeans. The crack was packaged individually for sale. The driver was taken into custody and transported to the Calhoun County Correctional Facility where he was lodged for Possession of Crack with Intent to Sell and Driving with a Suspended License. Approximately six hundred dollars which the suspect had on his person was forfeited. Sgt A.
